Hey all, just wanted to post something on the lighter side, and I thing it is something that will bring refreshing as well.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE YOU LEARNED While in the Assembly (ok if you are still in Lord Bless You and you can post as well) and give us a verse or two of it.   :D

Was it ones like Come and Dine, Lord, I hear of showers of blessing, Wonderful the Matchless Grace of Jesus, Were marching to Zion, Brighten the Corner where you are, Oh the love that sought me, etc.

The one that touched me the most after we learned it was IS Your ALL on the Altar of Sacrifice Laid?

You have longed for sweet peace, and for faith to increase.
And have earnestly, fervently prayed.
But you cannot have rest or be perfectly blest

My two favorite hymns from the Assembly have always
been "A mighty fortress is our God"(I don't know why but
I always loved this hymn written by Martin Luther). I also loved the hymn "Christ the Lord is risen today"---

 I have always loved the following hymn. The first time I heard it I knew it was "for me". We owe Him so much. Won't it be awesome to see all He has done for us unfolded in eternity. We will be so amazed.

There were 2 hymns in a row in the Inter-varsity Hymn Book that were both sung to the tune Finlandia.

I use to sing these to my children as infants whenever I rocked them to sleep.  My oldest son Joshua often sings them as a source of strength in hard times.


The first is known as Eric Liddell's favorite hymn

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.

My favorite hymn is:

That's one thing I loved about fellowship - those hymns we sang, I still sing them all the time!  My favorite one wasn't taught while I was still in, I think it's #651.  It's been my theme song since 1989 and has helped me a great deal ever since:

Has anyone else found that the only christian songs they know are 100 years old.

well.........i believe a lot of the contempory christian music to be christian songs........

Not to say that contempory songs are not christian, it's just that the assembly only sings older hymns.

Very true, but than again, the assembly approached worship as something revered and solemn. "You are coming before the Lord this Morning in Worship, not hanging out watching football, remeber that."  This outlook obviously dictated the song choice as well as the attire.

Now, i personally see nothing wrong with coming before the Lord in focused reverence, but that is not the only correct way.

Actually the "key year" is 1923.  Any song written before that is considered "public domain", and so they could be added to the "Hymns and Spiritual Songs" without all the red tape of reporting printing, sales, and meeting attendance.

It the early days we used the "Intervarsity Hymnal" which had only a few more contemporary songs.  Very few of the copyright holders were willing to "wave their rights" when the hymn book was being sold "at cost".

The second key year is 1856, which is when the brethren hymn book "Hymns for the Poor of the Flock" was first published.  The current version is called "Hymns for the Little Flock".

So, practically every song sung in the assemblies is over 80 years old.

 

On the note of 'what can be classified as christian", i just found a rather interesting band.  The group name is "Living Sacrifice", and the following lyrics are from their song "Spirit Fall":

Most/all of their songs hold the same lyrical consitency in terms of content, but the big catch is that their "style" parallels that of death metal.

What is interesting about some of the music of today, if you take away the music and just present the lyrics to those that like the "old style", they will agree that what they are reading is touching and very deep.  

From Hillsongs to Donald T. Lawrence the Lord is still moving his people to write deep lyrics to meet needs.

Whaaa ? What's wrong w/ the music  8)

Rudy you kill me, but to answer those who may seriously be asking that question.  Nothing is wrong with the music.  Those 100+ year old hymns as most of us know where mainly put to either tunes of that day, or have the musical flow of the time in which they were written.

If anyone has heard of the records "Hymns Triumphant" by the London Philharmonic, those hymns are truly great!

I have to say, those songs nauseate me. Literally.

Vaccuums and scissors and flowbees be Thine.

My own special corruption of "Blessings and Honor and Glory be Thine" from the early 90's, during the era when you could not get away from the flowbee informercials if you turned on a TV set.

I remember when Shawn had one and was trying to talk people into letting him cut their hair.

I saw a flowbee used on a show once.  The tried it on a maniquin, and it jammed and pulled a bit hunk of hair out.

 Dennis's reaction to my words was "That is not good."

Dennis was a lot of fun.

One brother begain singing the In-N-Out Hamburger jungle: "In-N-Out, In-N-Out, that's what a hamburger's all about."

Dennis, very seriously, said: "That's hamburger worship."

Dennis could be very intense especially when he was happy. I rememer how he often lit up when he encountered other Chinese people. And the time I accompanied him to a Chinese Christian bookstore in Monterrey Park, he could not contain his joy at seeing all these books in Chinese. I know the rest of us really could not appreciate Dennis's isolation at time.

One time he exclaimed in Chinese, "I have believed in Jesus!" and Erik and Angel's daughter Brook, just a toddler back then, tried to repeat it.

     I have never been a morning person.  It takes me a long time to feel ready to face the day.  Several vigorous physical activities must preceed any attempt at a "morning time," or you'll find me asleep & drooling into my Bible.  The demands of the assembly-paced lifestyle only exacerbated the condition...
     That wonderful old song that begins "When morning gilds the skies, My heart awaking cries,"  was always followed (in my mind) by the single word, "AAARRRGGHHH!!!!!"  :-[

An oldie but goodie written in 1739 by Nikolaus von Zinzendorf, a Moravian missionary who harbored persecuted Christians at his German estate, 28 years after anabaptist ancestors of mine were banished from Switzerland with only the clothes on their backs.

I am not a morning person either. I don't really enjoy going to work in the morning. Last semester, I taught an intro to creative writing course at SDSU at 10:00 am and I woke up much earlier than that to prepare. That was brutal and I had a serious Starbucks addiction as a result (I have recently detoxed from it by ordering coffee not as often, and when I do, ordering it from the local independent shop, which is very good. http://www.twiggs.org/ ).

I have always stayed up too late, even in the Assembly. I averaged 4-6, with 4 being the average for Sat night. I exaggerate but who had time for sleep in the Assembly?

     Good to hear from you.  Your point just illustrates how perfect the assembly system was planned out:  After running us ragged through endless days & nights of work, faimily concerns, stewardships & meetings, they provided us with an all-night-of-prayer, at which we could catch up on our sleep!  :o ::) ;D

It is a wonderful worship song. I have heard different renditions but my favourite is Michael W. Smith's. It is a good hymn to put yourself right in God's palm and let Him just rejoice over you with singing as well. Hallelujah it is marvelous.

I haven't heard that hymn in decades!  I used to think of it in the sense of actually "feeling" the touch of His hand on mine, and every time I heard or sang it I wondered if I would ever know such an experience.

Now, at the tender age of 62, I have begun to understand His touch more in the sense of "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine..." and have a better idea of what it means.
