i got the Attach: feature working due to popular demand. this allows you to upload (small) pictures of yourself, your family, your goldfish, or whatever else you want to proudly display to the world. to use this just go to the line that says Attach: (right above the Post button) and click Browse, then find the photo you want to upload. try to keep the photos somewhat small. i am setting a size upper limit of 200k, which i can adjust if its not working out. enjoy!

Brian, your attach feature only appears present for some of your users: perhaps those who are running the same browser/os combination as yourself.  I can't find any mention of the attach feature in the source the server is giving me, so perhaps this determination is being made based in what the browser reports.

If you find it let me know.

It is probably just the browser that I'm using that is messing up I can't attach files either.

There is no attach button.  There is an attach field, with a Browse button just above the Post button, below the Disable Smilies check box, below the Message window.

i did some more digging last night after scott reported it wasn't working for him, and realized it worked for me because i am an admin, and it worked for marcia because she is in a Member Group (Leading Postrix). i can only give permission to Member Groups to be able to post photos, so i either need to add everyone to a member group, or find some other work around so all of you can have this feature.

so, just to clarify - those of you who are saying you can't see the attach option, you are not blind or insane. it really isn't there for you. but its not because of anything you need to change on your end, i just need to make some adjustments on my end and then it should work for everyone. i will attempt to execute aforementioned adjustments forthwith.

carry on,

Dear Mr. Admin person...

I cannot agree here...
"so, just to clarify - those of you who are saying you can't see the attach option, you are not blind or insane. it really isn't there for you."

I know for a fact that at least one of the options above apply to me.   Maybe both??

" but its not because of anything you need to change on your end, i just need to make some adjustments on my end and then it should work for everyone."

Will I first see photos of trees walking or will this healing be all at once?  <grin>

With apologies to Mr. Guthrie:
Admin Brian looked at the poster, then he looked at the Seeing Eye dog.  And Admin Brian realized that there was no way that the poster was going to see the twenty-seven tiny little digital photos with the dolphins and penguins on them, or understand the funny little paragraphs declaring why someone chose this picture.

Be Blessed,  Tony (with nose against the screen)...maybe I need a touch screen?

: Re:photo post

Tony,

In case you were wondering, two pictures have been posted in this thread so far.  The picture that Brian posted shows an array of small square mirrors, eight wide by thirteen high for a total of a hundred and four mirrors.  Each reflects a somewhat distorted picture of a fragment of Brian taking the picture.  After looking at his fragmented picture, I still don't know what he looks like.

Marcia posted a picture showing a dolphin leaping out of the water, and in place of a second dolphin leaping next to it, the photo has been edited to show a cow instead.

Marcia's "ID" picture is a video clip which shows a penguin walking on the ice on a "pond".  What actually happens is that the ice breaks and the penguin falls on its face in the water.  The video clip has been edited to show the second penguin standing nearby using its wing to push the first one over onto its face.

Hugh's "ID" picture is the mascot of the LINUX operating system which is a fat cartoon penguin.

: Re:photo post
: sfortescue February 12, 2004, 04:00:22 PM
I remember that there used to be someone in Fullerton who always had his pet rat on his shoulder whereever he went, even at meetings and outreach.  When I was a kid, my mom had many animals.  She once wrote a paper for a writing class at college called, "Obsevations on the fecundity of Rodentia Muridae, or how I came to have eighty white rats."  As kids we used to do all sorts of things with the rats like putting them through mazes.  They seem to like mazes.  Rats tend to be very friendly, at least when they are tame.  This is in contrast with tree squirrels, which tend to be ornery even when tame.

: Re:photo post
: Joe Sperling February 13, 2004, 01:57:33 AM
Stephen----

When I was a kid a friend of mine gave away his two rats to me. One was "mama rat" and the other was "baby rat"(he of course was the offspring of "mama"). they were white and brown and medium sized. But I could put them on the ground and they woould literally follow me around the yard. They would never bite, and they were quite intelligent.

But then I made a huge error. I bought 2 more smaller rats at the pet shop and put them in the cage with them( I had a huge bird cage that they lived in). The next morning the two new smaller rats were both dead--bloodied at the bottom of the cage. Then the next morning the "mama" rat had killed the "baby" the same way. She also started biting me. Then she eventually died.  Sorry for the strange rat story--but you brought up rats, so I thought I'd share my experience.

I think I remember the guy with the rat on his shoulder. His name was Jerry I think. His right ear looked strange, like the ear lobe had been gnawed off or something. Just kidding. I don't remember that guy---could he go to the meetings with the rat?

I believe you young fellers are thinking of Mike Abt (pronounced APT).  This was when we first started meeting at Hillcrest Park.  Mike used to bring his rat with him everywhere, but when we began breaking bread at Hillcrest, George either told him or had someone tell him to take the rat home before he would be allowed to enter the building.  Mike was with us for years, but I never saw the rat again...

Hi folks,

Mike Abt is with the Lord.

I ran into him at the doctor's office about 10 years ago.  He told me he had been diagnosed with colon cancer.

He had surgury, chemotherapy and so on...but he died anyway.

I visited him  before he died.  He was trusting the Lord.

Sadly, his wife told me that "I don't believe any more".

Since I was an apostate the folks who arranged his funeral (assembly folks) didn't invite me.  I found out later that he was gone.

This is a sad state of affairs that has been oft-repeated wherever there was an assembly.  The non-exclusive one true church & testimony couldn't risk the contamination that might open the eyes of its labor force through the occasion for simple fellowship with someone from outside the sheepfold prison walls. :'(    I was once an enforcer of such oppression, and am unspeakably grateful to have been forgiven and to no longer be a part of it.

Hi folks,

How do you post these photos?

Tom

: Re:photo post

Hi folks,

I have a scanner, but I have never printed the 375 page manual so I can use it.

How do you post these photos?

Tom

Tom,

I have a digital camera. They are very inexpensive if you just want something to use for things such as this. I got a very cheap one to email pix of my kids to my folks.

When I was getting regular film developed, I also had it developed to disc. Couple extra bucks. Take the disc home. Pop it into the computer. There they are.

If you don't want to mess with your scanner (though it's surely not as hard as the length of the manual makes it seem), take a photo to Wal-Mart or whatever you have out there and use their scanner in the photo developing section. As easy to use a regular copier. Costs a couple bucks and they give you a disc with your pix on it.

Once you have the pix on your computer (they usually default to My Pictures in the My Documents folder), just click on the new Browse button Brian set up for us in the Posting screen, click on the pic you want to post, click Open and post as usual.

Make sure your pic is 200KB or less, though. Easy to find out. Right click on the pic. Click on Properties and it tells you. If it's too big, use your photo editing software that comes on the Wal-Mart disc or with your digital camera or on your scanner software or maybe even pre-loaded on your computer. Anyway, crop it down some until you get the size you want and then you can post it.

Hope that was what you were looking for.

S

PS - OK, I'm posting one of myself. Yes, I'm a dork. Known it for a long time. Don't need anyone to point it out (ahem, Joe)! ;D

That is so strange. Just a couple of nights back Mike Abt's face came to my mind and it took a while before I remembered his name. I don't remember the rat, but I do remember he had a small wood flute that he played. At that time he said he was studying to be a composer. I also remember that for a long time he defied the norm and did not wear suits like most of the male saints did. He'd wear a shirt with a string tie around his neck, and I remember he had a bit of a nasal tone when he talked. I don't remember a lot more about him, but something brought him to mind the other night, and now I learn he has passed on.

Hmm. Unless the Peace Corps is actually a front for the smuggling operation you and your rugby buddies came up with. Now I know the REAL reason you're coming down here next month.

I lived on a farm when I was a child.  Times were hard back then, and the area where I lived was economically depressed.

I knew that the neighbors were having a hard time making ends meet.

One day, I heard a knock at the door, and when I went to answer, this is the sad sight that I saw.

It just broke my heart.

... doesn't matter, really.  When I figure out my digital camera, I'll post a few pics of my kids and etc.  Have patience with me though, it's the kodak software that my computer doesn't like.  I seem to accumulate a lot of trash cookies and history files and maybe other stuff I don't know creeps in to take up memory on my laptop.  I've still got lots of stuff this machine came with that I've never used and just takes up useless space.  When that's all figured out Marcia, your need for a photo will be met, I assure you.  Just remember, you get what you ask for.

Good question.  Perhaps the ambiguity helps.  My search of the internet was for a picture of the robot, but it's better to be seen as having a human side, although I'm not as virtuous as Will Robinson.  My mom found an old picture of me as a kid in which I was wearing a shirt very similar to the one in the picture.

A smaller picture might work better in the profile.

it is the humidity in this part of the country that is

Hi Everyone!

Tried to attach a photo but am unable to separate picture from entire group as it wants to send all my photos which is too large a file.

I try to just type the name of the single picture but the computer won't recognize it by the title under the photo.

Any computer geeks out there with the answer to why I can't send my photo?  I have had no problems emailing it to others by just clicking on the photo, but the BB apparently can't separate the file, or my little photo is just too big for the BB?  I can't believe that.

                                     Thanks,  Mark C.

: Re:photo post
: Recovering Saint June 06, 2004, 03:24:28 AM
Hi Mark

1. Open the picture on your PC
2. Select File/Save as and save to your desktop as a .jpg file. See the file type list below the file name.
3. Right click on the file on the desktop and check the properties and check the size. More than 200KB it needs to be smaller. That is harder to do. Just PM me and I can email you how to do this.
4. Start a new post on the BB
5. Click Browse and select the file from the desktop
6. Click Save
(You should see a path like this "C:\directory\filename.jpg" inserted above the buttons to Save, Preview, Reset Form, if not repeat step 5. and 6.)
7. Type your comments etc. in the post.
8. Click below the post on the button marked Post or Save whichever appears wait for it to load.

See the picture below from an outing this Winter.

Thank God for Hugh & others who are patient with us old codgers.  I have successfully posted photos, but I don't do it often, so every time I have to learn the process all over again.  If all else fails, we can always e-mail our pix to somebody who knows what they're doing & request that they post for us ;)

: Re:photo post
: Mark C. June 06, 2004, 06:07:08 AM
Thanks Hugh!

However, the file must be too large and I'm afraid I will need your further help in figuring out how to make it smaller.  It's already a thumbnail size and if it gets much smaller you won't be able to see it.

                                                     God Bless,  Mark C.

What do you mean us old Codgers, Kemosabe? ;)

: Re:photo post
: Recovering Saint June 06, 2004, 09:22:47 AM
Al

The Collie was at the farm where a bunch of us singles went for a hay ride. It was a gorgeous day in the backwoods of Quebec.

Mark

To make a file smaller in KB size I could do it for you and send it back to you. The best way for you to make it smaller is to have software that is used to share pictures by email. They have predetermined settings like email, print, thiumbnail, and screen 15", 17" etc. The more technical software has byte size and gets into pixels and or inches. A good size is 640 X 480 pixels that usually is small enough to upload. If you have the other software use the email setting and save the file to the desktop then upload the file. If you have one of those new cameras with megapixels galore they print beautiful pictures but are way too big to upload here. Let me know if this helps or else just email the picture and I can resize it and return it to you.

Hugh ;D

Hoorah--and many thanks to Hugh!  It came through!!! :) :)

In the photo on the previous post I am the diver, though it probably is hard to tell who that masked man is.

The funny thing is that I do not know that this shark is behind me.  In front of me are a bunch of sharks (you can't see this in the pic.) which are circling in a wide sandy bottom area and there are photographers/divers taking photos of them.

I think that I have a good safe distance between me and the sharks and all of a sudden the one in the pic. comes sailing by right behind me and passes withing three feet of my head! :o  I don't realize this until all the cameras start turning my way; "why", I wonder, "are these guys turning toward me and wanting to take my photo?", I'm wondering, and this is why I am reaching to remove my regulator from my mouth in this photo so that I can smile.

Some of the others took a better shot with the shark passing me and my surprised look, but I will have to wait until they send them to me to share them with you.

Photo has nothing to do with the Assembly, but possibly some could come up with a caption that might be analagous.
Thanks again Hugh for making this possible! :)

Here I am with the Borg Queen.

: Re:photo post
: delila August 10, 2004, 03:15:44 AM
Shin,
the borg will always have a 'special' place in my heart.  Star Trek writers had no idea how they 'spoke to the heart' of x-assembly-ites with the borg stories.  Seven's journey to become an individual was/is much like mine, only she's got better manners.
d

: Re:photo post
: shinchy August 10, 2004, 11:38:17 AM
Delila,
They have a special place in mine as well. First Contact came out a couple of months before I left so I definitely identified with Picard's anger in that film. When I left, I remembered thinking that I left my collective. Under normal circumstances, it would sound so anarchist or communist, but the Borg term definitely fit the Assembly.

I've always liked how they handled Seven's character on Voyager. She definitely was more interesting than some of the characters who were "fully human."

--shin

: Re:photo post
: delila August 10, 2004, 08:04:05 PM
Shin,
Seven's uniqueness is almost common now when one considers that she was taken from her parents at a young age and given a new identitiy.  Perhaps it's just common to me, having left home at age 15 to join the assembly (and leave a gruelling home life) and then working over the years in family crisis intervention situations such as home care under the supervision of social services, women's shelters and of course education - where children tell all.  So many children are growing up searching for identity and what they see in pop culture I'm afraid is not generally healthy.  It's a heart ache for me because probably it rings the old bells.  But I find a great deal of solace in sharing the joys and adventures of my own children, a lot of healing there too.  I think my kids have taught me more than anyone, and by kids I mean the two I gave birth to, all those that play with my kids in our back yard and all those I've 'taught' over the years.

You may not know this but delila and myself and most of the regular Canadian posters are Star Trek fans.  When we left the assembly about a year ago now, we binged on Star Trek episodes.  We got a lot more spiritual insight from the episodes since we were out.  The parallels are uncanny.

MM

Marcia,
I remember when I was new to the board, we had some interesting talks about the Kira and Dukat episode where Dukat acts like Jim Jones.

I definitely posted these for you Trek fans.  :)

For somone like me who doesn't gamble, the Trek Experience was one of the things that made my visit to Vegas fun (that and the buffets). I went through the museum, saw the costumes and props, took a look at the Trek timeline, and went on two rides. When I looked at the Klingon exhibit, an actor in Klingon make-up and costume walked up to me and curated the exhibit. I got a pic with the Borg Queen, which made me very happy. I don't think I'd be too happy if she was real. I would not want to get assimilated.

I'm happy to talk Trek anytime.

Just thought I'd add a picture of my wonderful family.  To those of you who knew me when . . . well, let's just say I look the same, only slightly older.  This photo was taken of my wife and I on February 14, 2004 out in Las Vegas at her aunt's wedding.

I wanted to post one of "My Three Sons" . . .literally.  They are great kids.

I wasn't very forthcoming with my last post, so I figured I'd post this most recent picture taken after a  concert performance. At 47 I can still rock out with the best of them. I promise--no more photos after this.

Hey Joe:
Is that a Gibson hollow body guitar??!!

Verne----

No--it is actually a guitar my father bought for me back
in 1966 called an "Orpheus". I still have the guitar, though I'm the one with the hollow body now. By the way, it looks like I made a typo in my favor(or maybe it was wishful thinking). I turned 49 in August, so I was 48 when I made that post, not 47.

Hi Verne

I was a Ritenour fan in days gone by.  Mainly during the Sugarloaf Express era, when his band was all the LA ringers.

I saw him many times at the Baked Potato and The Greek Theater in LA.   Believe it or not, he was quite boring live.  So perfect, and clean, but not really exciting.

I much preferred Larry Carlton, and Steve Lukather. when they performed with Koinonia....Abe Laboriel, Bernard Purdie/Jeff Porcaro, David Benoit, Lyle Mays and others.  Amazing music, and we usually sat ten feet away.

Suzie and I had our first date at the Palomino, where we saw Tower of Power.  Now, there's a band.

Anyhow, Ritenour never got me too excited.  Did you know he played on Pink Floyd's The Wall?  It's a little known secret...not mentioned on the album.

BTW, I always thought he played a Gibson ES335.

You certainly have interesting taste in music.

Unfortunately, I never got to see him live. From what yoy say though, perhaps I did not miss much. I was probably mesmerised by his technical prowess.

I love 'em all man. Exquisite taste, if I do say so myself.
Abe Laboriel is an original monster on four strings.
Did you know that he is a believer? Oh yeah!
I did see Lyle with Pat Metheny at Millikin U a few years back.

Don't tell anybody but my call on the Gibson was just a guess from the sound!. I used to do jazz riffs with a friend in grad school who had a blonde hollow-body beauty.  :)
p.s. I am heading up to St. Louis with the fretless this weekend to see my main man Peter James and do some jammin'... :) :) :)
p.p.s Get a load of this...some guy stopped me in the music store today and asked me if I would be interested in playing in Japan....can you believe it? The only thing he knew about me was that I was armed with a Fender Precision...he musta heard somethin'
What would I tell my wife and kids???!!  ;D

An interesting guitarist to listen to because of his varied "styles" of playing is Steve Morse. I have no idea why he decided to play with the old band Deep Purple, because his talent isn't shown there. The best playing is heard on albums by either the "Steve Morse Band" or the band he started and created called "The Dixie Dregs". It's almost all instrumental--but he'll go from rock to blue grass style, to classical, to blues on almost every album. Check him out sometime if you get a chance. Jeff Beck isn't too bad either ;D

The whole late Seventies era in the LA music scene was really amazing.  I didn't realize just how priviledged I was, until recently.

I never saw a punk show, or what went of as "New Wave," but after the posers like Chick Corea and Stanly Clarke introduced a new generation of Jazz Fusion, the real guys, like Carlton, Ritenour, Laboriel, Jaco, Steve Gad  and others, finally got the recognition they deserved.

The truly amazing thing is that a person could see these guys a few chairs away, any week of the year!  This was the time when Mesa Boogie amps were brand new, and huge improvements in sound systems were coming about.  A small club, like the Baked Potato, was basically turned into a direct-to-disc recording session.  It made arena rock seem like a garage band!  These guys could play live with perfection.

My favorite music from that era has to be Steely Dan's Aja, and Gaucho, as well as Joni Mitchell.  All the heavyweights played on those albums.

Major highlights, for me, would include larry Carlton's solo on Third World Man, from Gaucho,  and anything Jaco, as long as he was with Joni.

There's nothing in the music world, at this moment, that I am aware of, that compares with the scene in LA at that time.  (of course, I'm pretty out of touch, but I still have friends in the business, and they aren't real excited either.)

When I hear the same music I listened to in Highschool played at my kids' highschool, I have to wonder.   Could it be that the slacker generation isn't as creative?

There was definitely something in the air back then.
I dropped a C-note in the music store yesterday buying a bunch of charts of seventies music...it is truly awesome!
Nothing like that stuff today, sadly...
Verne
p.s I f I were to pick a favorite it would be a close call between Weather Report's Heavy Weather album (I still think it should be illegal to play a piece like Portrait of Tracy on the bass! Those harmonics by Jaco are murder!) and Freddie Hubbard and company's Polar A.C which I have been trying unsuccesfully to get a replacement copy of now for years...

p.s. Ever listen to the Mahvishnu Orchestra with Johnny McGlaughlin? They were a bit too avant garde for most...
I got all the music (that doesn't mean I can play it  :))

You seem to like the heavier, "purer" stuff from that era.  I went through a phase where I really appreciated the less accessible stuff, with no words, complex melodic lines, and truly outrageous technical displays.   I still do like it, in some ways.

However, for some reason I began to gravitate towards the commercial, song oriented pieces.  The musicians themselves were also grateful, as they made much more money from the hits, then from stuff like Heavy Weather.  Nevertheless, there's nothing like that around today.

We saw Steely Dan at the MidState fair last summer, and they were truly at the top of their game.  Perfect performance of many of the old hits, with new arrangements on quite a few.  When compared with the sad displays that some of the modern acts put on, they seemed even better.  Not only that, what with being sober and all, they actually appeared to really appreciate the audience, and worked as hard as they could.

Speaking of bass players, my all time favorite is Paul McCartney.  No, he can't do what Jaco did, but he did define the instrument in a new way, not to mention having some of the coolest bass lines around.

Note selection is the man's forte for sure. No greater harmonic genius ever lived...kinda reminds me of Wayne Shorter in that sense...
You may not believe this but I really dig a lot of John Denver's stuff. Sometimes I would just go nuts in the shower...know whatta mean?

The long awaited picture of Verne, taken in August 1985, and posted with Verne's permission.

OK, I love the new layout, even if I do have to get used to doing everything backwards from the way it was (last page/first page reversal; latest post at the bottom instead of the top, etc.),

But where's the photo of Verne?!!
