 Where did John and Paul find the inspiration to the song, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" from???

  Hint: It has something to do with a recent death!  Bang!  bang! bang!  Yep he's dead!!!

According to Paul McCartney the song "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is something out
of the blue. It is not about any event. It's a fictional story. He said at first it didn't
even have the word "silver" in it, but it sounded better.

According to this professor (Professor Thomas F. X. Noble, the Robert M. Conway Director of the Medieval Institute and Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame), the silver hammer thing really didn't happen.  Kind of a middle age urban legend.

"Martha may have been the name of Paul's two-year-old Old English Sheepdog, but this song was not an account of canine love. 'Martha My Dear' is a plea to a girl who has always been the singer's muse: he asks her to remember him because he still believes that they were meant for each other. In January 1968, Paul and Jane Asher had anounced that they were going to get married during the year but Paul began dating other girls while Jane was away acting and in July she called off the engagement. "We still see each other and love each other, but it hasn't worked out," Jane said at the time. "Perhaps we'll be childhood sweethearts and meet again and get married when we're about 70."

The song began as a two-handed piano exercise, something that was deliberately beyond his level of competence at the time and designed to stretch him musically. 'Martha My Dear' was recorded in October 1968 - by which time Linda Eastman had become Paul's girlfriend."

I think Heather might have something to say about that, seeing as how he'll be 70 in about 6 years . . .

While I heard that John experimented with certain things like this, he cannot be labeled as a homosexual.  Brian Epstein was, however.

It was Brian! "The 5th Beatle"  Oh' well I thought I finally had one to stump you guys!  Guess I better start reading more books!  I know Billy worked on "Let it Be" but I don't think that made him a Beatle??

Billy Preston, Eric Clapton, Jim Keltner...all these guys worked with the Beatles, but none of them were called the 5th. Beatle.  I wasn't sure if it was Epstein or Martin who was called the 5th Beatle, but I would have guessed Epstein, if I was on "Who wants to be a Millionaire."

Billy Preston is the only person other than a Beatle to be credited on a Beatles
album. Go to "Google" and put "Who  was called the fifth Beatle?" and you'll
see Billy Preston's name come up over and over.  But it's true that some called
Martin the "fifth Beatle" also. I was going to say you'd lose on "Who wants to be
a Millionaire--but you could be right.

Brian Epstein was called the fifth Beatle before Preston, I'm sure.  He and Martin worked with the fab four prior to Preston.

Clapton plays guitar on a number of songs, and wrote Savoy Truffle.
Keltner drums on a number of songs, most noted is Octopus's Garden.
Anyhow, I am confident that it's not Preston.

Did you ever see George Harrison's memorial concert, a year after his death?  All the guys I mentioned are in the band, and they are awesome.

I altered my post while you were posting. I looked further at the threads on Google
and you are right Martin was called the fifth Beatle also. I jumped the gun on that
one. It looks like others played on Beatles albums, but only Preston is actually listed
with a credit on the albums.

Among Beatles scholars, there are those who promote the Prestonian error,and there are the Epsteiners.  The thing we must always be careful of is to not divide Beatledom.  I can listen to Abbey Road with a Prestonian, as long as they keep quiet.  I think we must stick to the essentials, and in doing so, those who oppose us will be humbled.

I sit atop my lofty perch as I type this, and look down upon my wayward Prestonian baby brothers.  They will learn...if they google enough, or perhaps go to ask.com.

Quite enlightening, don't you think? That, and it mentioned George Martin several times. I'd always heard it was him. But I won't put the ashes back in the fireplace just yet.

Actually, I found links that said it was Epstein, Martin, Sutcliffe, Best, Preston and Clapton.

I chose Epstein as the only possible correct answer because:
1.)He was the first to be referred to as the 5th Beatle
2.)I thought it was him, and didn't want to change my position on it.  ;)

They will always be the fab four, not five.

The link I mentioned previously will show a different Fifth Beatle if you go back and click on it again and again. I've seen Michael Jackson, Barney Fife, Curious George, somebody from Devo, and a few others.
