A poll shows that 40% of Canadian teens believe the US is a force for evil.  50% believe it is a force for good.  10% are undecided.

Of the Frenchies in Canada, %64 believe the US is a force for evil.

In one incident, hockey fans in Montreal booed during the playing of the American national anthem. Then-Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s spokesman was caught on mike calling President Bush a moron. And while the streets of Quebec (search) were filled with war protesters, a member of Parliament from the ruling Liberal Party was quoted as saying: “Damn Americans. I hate those bastards.”

Friendly neighbors to the north?

Arthur,

It is not very friendly to refer to French Canadians as Frenchies.  BTW my husband is one and he is friendly as is his family.  My kids are 50% French Canadian.

I agree that the polls don't look too good.  I wonder if they polled the east only.  Also, history has shown that liberal Prime Ministers do not get along favorably with Republican US Presidents.  If we had elected a conservative government things would have turned different.  We don't have a republican party up here else I would have voted republican.  The conservative guy I voted for in my riding ended up winning his seat over the liberal incumbent.

Things are never 'perfect' no matter what one votes for EH?? Smiley

Yeah I know about the Frenchies, that's why I said it.  But I do appologize to you personally because I know that you are not like them. The term is for anyone who deserves it.  Though it's kinda of silly, it's like calling me a yank, no biggie.  Or the democrats girlie-men, lol.  My hats off to you to be a conservative in Canada.  What kinds of things do you have to watch, being a Christian there?  At your local market, can you tell the grocer "God bless you"?  Would that get you arrested?  How about speaking about Jesus to your neighbors?  At school?  In the newspaper...well, I already know about that one. Where else can't you say you are a Christian?

Arthur, do you mean watch on TV or observe as to what's happening in society?  If it is TV, then it is mostly American programming.  Though there are a few very humourous Canadian shows like 'Royal Canadian Air Farce', 'This Hour has 22 Minutes', and 'The Red Green Show', and then there's 'Canadian Idol' produced by the very same producers who produce 'American Idol'.

In society,  probably very similar to the States, though we have surpassed you in giving gays rights to marry etc.  However the largest gay communities are in the States.

Yes, I can speak to others about God and Jesus.  The kind of reception I get would depend on the individual I speak to.

The world's impression of Americans is that they are arrogant and bullies.  Do you agree?

Yeah, I can believe much of the rest of the world, especially Europeans, see the U.S. as arrogant.  We can't help people's impressions. I see Europe as being filled with socialist anti-God, anti-semitic, pro-muslim collaborators.  Maybe I'm wrong, it's the impression I get from reports I've heard.

Are there Christian TV stations in Canada?  Or radio stations?  Are talk show hosts allowed to say what they want?

Cheesy; JULY 23RD AT 10:38 PM:

YES ARTHUR :
There is a Religion tv station in Canada. It is on Cable 63.
It is multireligion, because of the multiculturalism in this country .
It is a very good station.

David Mainse I believe was one of the ones who got that station going. Anyways this program is on daily on the Global Network.

On Sunday Mornings, we get on some stations Christian Services.
There is a Christian Radio Station in Ottawa.

A local Ottawa Station, News Program ANchor, developed prostate cancer last year, Prayers and well wishes were spoken frequently as this Anchor was under going his treatments.

Any television shows that are imported from the states that have any God story to them, tends to become very popular, like Touch By an Angel, Joan of Arcada,  even Sue Thomas, FBI speaks of God frequently in there episodes. Sometimes these shows become more popular in Canada, than they are in the states.

Have you ever watched any music awards show, and then compare them with TV, or Movie award shows like the Emmys or Oscars.  Each music award show, 90% or more winners of those awards thank God in their acceptance speaches, but any actor who accepts an award, they are very few actors who thank God in their acceptance speaches.
Even on Canadian Idol, the one who was voted out this past week, Honoured God for allowing her to get as far as she did in the contest.

I agree with Marcia, we have enough friction between the French and the English, My ex husband was part French, so my oldest daughter is part French.
And since their is friction between the French and the English, we dont need anyone from outside this country to add to the intolerance between the two languages.
At least say Francaphones instead of "Frenchie", French Canadians are not from Paris.  French Canadians language is a mix of French, English, Indian, etc.  There is very few places were the French Canadian French is purely European French.

Did you know , Fellowship Evanglist Baptist, has church planting at an alarming rate in Quebec.  Quebec is the province that are seeing people turning their lives for Jesus than anywhere else in Canada, that is associated with FEB .
So dont kick the French Canadian down, because that is where God is working.

THere is a web site for you to look it up for yourself but I couldnt find it off hand.
Yes Christian is still alive in Canada, but it is now that Canadian need to start perserving our freedom as Christians.

I agree with your comments re. the spiritual/mental condition of Europeans/Canadians to a certain degree.  I do believe that most Americans have a distorted picture of anything outside the USofA.  Off-hand do you know what is Canada's national capital?  Most Canadians know that the capital of the US is New York. Wink  Just kidding.  Canada's moral condition is definitely on the decline, as it is worldwide.  The truth is that, generally speaking, Americans are arrogant and bullies.  Yet, I also respect the Americans for their contribution and aid to the dilemnas in the world.

This was circulating after the 9/11 trajedy happened:

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars! into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.

You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon -! not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America!

Without looking it up, from what I remember, the capital of Canada is Quebec.  That's also the name of a province in Canada.  What else...let's see, if I recall there are 11 (or was it 13) provinces in Canada. Quebec, British Columbia (we see the licence plates here every once in awhile--visit "beautiful British Columbia", Saskatiwan (i know i spelled that wrong), and a bunch of others that I forget, and one that covers the top tundra up there called Northwest Territories, right?  Isn't there also one called the Yukon, or is that just an area in Alaska.
I remember that the campaign slogan for the 10th president of the U.S., Zachary Taylor,  was "54-40 or fight", saying that he would go to war with Britian over the US/Canandian border.  54 40 being the longitudinal coordinates, which would be quite higher than what it is today, I guess that was a broken campaign promise.

Canada was settled by Frenchmen at first who, as trappers, could identify with the natives there better than English colonists  (ref. the movie Black Robe).  They fought as allies in the French and Indian War against the British not too long before the American Revolution.

The British won, and...I'm a bit sketchy on this...but that must have been why Canada came under British control up until, what was it late 1800's? that Canada became independent of Britian.  I collect coins and Canada's coins still had pictures of British royalty even into the 50's, maybe beyond?

They have the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (mounties), and a form of Saturday Night Live, some of its actors produced Strange Brew--take off you hoser!

Canada help fight against Hitler in WWII and took part of the D-Day invasion.  James Doohan, Scotty on Star Trek, is from Canada and got shot four times as part of the d-day operation--three in the leg and one blew his finger off.  The only episode that you can see he is missing a finger is The Trouble with Tribbles.

Canada has the 2nd largest land mass of any nation in the world, but much in uninhabitable.  The population is, what, around 50-75 million?

I have relatives who live in Canada, immigrants from Holland after WWII.  I had a friend from Calgary who spoke with a noticable accent.  Haven't seen him in years.

Parlimentary government with a Prime Minister, similar to Britian though I don't think they have the whole lords, commons thing going on in Canada, correct me if I'm wrong.

Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos for baseball.  Lots of hockey teams, that's about all I know for sports.

And that's about the extent of my knowledge of Canada.

Good words you quoted.  The US has been a light of sorts and as such they have been hated, kinda like good parents are hated by bad children I guess.  Its just the heart of man showing its true colors.  The only reason the US has been any light at all is because of the effect of faith in the Bible has had.  Once that's out, so will the light be.

The US has received aid from other countries, though not recently.  In its inception, the French played an important role during the American Revolutionary war.  From the French the US bought the Louisianna Purchase which doubled its land size for, what $15 million I think.  I think that during the Civil War, some aid may have come as well, not too sure about that.

Arthur, let's just say that if that was the $100 question on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' then you'd be out of the game.  Matt Sciani, on the other hand, could proceed to the $200 question. Smiley

In reality though, you are correct.  In the recent past most of our Prime Ministers and Finance Ministers have been rich lawyers from Quebec.  Your knowledge of Canadian facts is quite impressive.  Have you seen Dudley Doright starring Brent Fraser who also starred in George of the Jungle?  A must watch if you want to increase your knowlegde of the mounties. Wink

A few more Canadian facts.  James Kirk aka William Shatner is also from Canada.  Canada was specifically involved in liberating Holland in WWII and protecting some dutch royalty.  If you visit Ottawa (Canada's national capital Wink) in May you can enjoy the tulip festival, a gift from the dutch people.  The dutch love Canadians because of our contribution to their liberation.

If you are from Holland you are either tall and blond, or short and blond eh??

Quote
from Marcia:
The truth is that, generally speaking, Americans are arrogant and bullies.

The TRUTH is that Americans are just like everyone else:  sinners.  Bullyism lies in the heart of every human, manifesting itself as environment permits and encourages.  The American environment has enabled an inordinate number of its citizenry to be publicly outspoken in distasteful displays of assumed superiority.
But America is also the home of a great "silent majority" which holds better values than those self-appointed spokespersons.  A journey through the American hinterlands will reveal a slower-paced lifestyle that still encourages unlocked doors and trust among neighbors.  Arthur has well explained this atmosphere's existence:
Quote
The only reason the US has been any light at all is because of the effect of faith in the Bible has had.
There are still many places in America where the light has not yet been extinguished but, greatly enhanced by the various media of television, movies, the internet and myriad printed publications, the night is surely coming, when no one can work.
There is no safe land to which to flee.  Our only safety is in Christ.  Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus.

I like to get in on educating Arthur about Canadian Geography.

When I was growing up, during my school years from the years of 1961 in S. K. to 1974 graduated high school.
Most of our history books and geography books during that time where made and sent from the States.
SO we learned alot of American geography and history.

I grew up in an even smaller village from where I live now.
I remember seeing cars from the States, with Skis on their roofs, and the occupant wandering where the snow was in the middle of July.

I watch Jeopardy , I am amazed except for the recent champion who played for 35 games, how many contestants dont know answers to even the simplest Canadain question.

Going from the Altantic Coast:
Newfoundland ,  capital city is St.John's
P.E.I. captial city is Charlettown
Nova Scotia , captial city is Halifax
New Brunswick, captial city is Frediction
Quebec , captial city is Quebec City
Ontario, captial city is Toronto
Manitoba captial city is Winnipeg
Saskatchewan, captial city is Regina
Alberta, captial city is Edmonton
British Columbia, captial city is Victoria

Canada has three territories now.
Northwest Territories
Yukon Territories
Nunavet Territories
We also own all the island in the Northwest Passage

Our Prime Minister is an elected official , who is at this time Paul Martin.
The government parties that is holding seats in parilament is, Liberals, Conservatives, NDP, Bloc,
at the present we have a minority government.

Capital of Canada is Ottawa
Canada has two official languages: French and English

The native population, governed by the First Nations.
Our first prime minister was Sir John A MacDonald
Our nations birthday is July 1st, and was founded in 1867.
Canada is surrounded by three oceans,
Atlantic , Artic, Pacific.

What separates Ontario and Quebec is the Ottawa River.
Which the explore Champain travelled up the valley.

That is all, off the top of my head.

Other celebrities that is Canadian beside William Shatner, there are so numerous I would need pages.
Cecline Dion, Shania Twain, Mike Meyers, Jim Carrey, Alan Thicke, Dan Akroy, Martin SHort, Donald Sutherland, etc, etc.
some of the late actors, John Candy, Phil Hartman, Lorne Green, Raymond Burr etc. etc.

What city was William SHatner, (James T. Kirk Star Trek) was born?
